Last Friday two friends and I decided to walk down the road and try out ‘Et Tu’ – the new bistro on the main street in Te Atatu. For years this place has been unsuccessfully run as some sort of eating establishment, but the formula was never quite right. It was with great interest that I watched the same people who set up Fuze café (in the same block of shops) so successfully, sell and move on to this building, to make it into a Bistro.
For a few months I walked past this building being renovated, interested at what sort of restaurant they would make it. Fuze café has continued to run smoothly and well, and is a popular place for breakfast and lunch, but does not stay open beyond that.
Et Tu opened late last year, and as I’ve walked past it has looked very appealing. Always a buzz happening outside, and the white roller screens which provide a temporary wall against the roadside extend the seating out into the pavement area.
We booked over the phone (recommended!), and arrived at 7pm to find a few tables full but not a crowd. Within the hour, though, every table was occupied.
The atmosphere is intimate and cosy. I like the terracotta plaster walls and the comfy bench seating along the side, and the chandeliers provide plenty of ambient lighting. The service was efficient and friendly.
I ordered a seafood pasta (around $28), which was very tasty with a brown tangy sauce and mussels, prawns, salmon, throughout. My friends were both happy with their own meals of fish and chips (19.50), and Hapuka steak on watercress salad (around $30).
The portions were just right, and both fish were tender and tasty.
Having already had drinks before walking down here, we didn’t sample the drinks menu, but that was quite extensive.
The friendly owner was there and she came over and chatted to our table for a while. She and her husband have been adjusting the menu to suit comments from patrons over the last couple of months, and mentioned that they intend to extend into a garden area out the back soon, which will serve tapas as well, and they will be serving lunch three or four days a week. GREAT!
I’ll definitely be coming here again.
